You Don't Need to Be "Ready to Sell" to Start the Conversation

Most business owners assume there's a right moment to reach out to someone like me — that they need a finished succession plan, a firm timeline, or a number already in mind before it's worth picking up the phone. In practice, the opposite is true. The owners who end up with the best outcomes are usually the ones who started talking years before they were "ready."

The conversation isn't a commitment

Reaching out doesn't mean you're selling next month, next year, or ever. It means getting a clear-eyed view of where your business stands today — what it's likely worth, what would move that number, and what a transition could actually look like for you. That's information every owner deserves to have, whether you're two years out, ten years out, or just curious.

Think of it less like meeting with a broker and more like a second opinion. No pressure, no obligation, no pitch — just an honest conversation grounded in your specific business and goals.

Why owners wait longer than they should

There are a few reasons business owners put this conversation off:

- "I'm not ready to sell." Understandable — but planning and selling are two different things. The earlier you understand your options, the more control you have over the eventual outcome.

- "I don't want people to know I'm exploring this." Any conversation with us is confidential. Exploring your options quietly is exactly the point.

- "I don't even know what my business is worth." That's usually the first and most valuable thing we can help with.

- "I've got years before I need to think about this." Maybe — but the owners who start early are the ones who end up building a business that's actually easier, and more valuable, to sell when the time comes.

None of these are good reasons to wait. If anything, they're reasons to start sooner.

What a first conversation actually looks like

There's no formal process, no paperwork, and no expectation attached to an initial call. Typically, we talk through:

- Where your business stands today

-Your personal goals

- What a realistic timeline might look like

- Whether now is a good moment to start planning, or whether it makes more sense to revisit this down the road

You walk away with a clearer picture — even if the answer is "not yet."
